CELEBRATE your unsung family heros

ELDER
LOVE LETTERS

An Elder Love Letter honours your family member and gives a gift to your children and future generations.
This letter will give you a chance to celebrate and honor your loved ones and will create a lasting connection for your family’s next generations.

I will create a letter that tells the stories your elder wants you to know. I will take the time to meet with them. I will interview them and record their memories and perspectives. I will write, and edit a letter to your family and can incorporate existing photos or other illustrations. I will send you and your loved ones the final version in digital form and I will create and provide a hard copy that can be shared in celebration.

Preserving Stories for Future Generations
Maybe you want to give your parents something really special that doesn’t add to your already full plate. You want your kids and grandkids to know your mom or dad, but you don’t know how to connect them. Maybe you are feeling that your time with them is getting shorter.  Perhaps you see them regularly, but there’s always a lot going on, and you don’t get to really listen to their stories.  They are doing fine, but you know that could change anytime or maybe their memory is starting to fail.

How to get started
Schedule a 15-minute call to learn more about creating your Elder Love Letter. You can tell me about your person and your goals for a project like this. I’ll give you details about my process, the product and the cost. The call is just for getting information. There will be absolutely no pressure to sign up. You may want to check with your elder or your other family members, or you just want to think it over.

About me
My name is Jocylyn McDowell. I grew up in Saskatchewan and Ontario, part of a family of six. My dad was a teacher, a musician and an engineer. He died when I was a teen, and consequently I didn’t get to know him well. My mother was an artist, a homemaker and a bon vivant.  She died in 2018 at 90, and I think about her every day. There are so many questions i wish i had asked her!
I have a Fine Arts degree from Queens University at Kingston, and a B.Sc. and an M.Sc. From University of British Columbia. I have lived in the Yukon on and off since 1983. I spent some summers in Dawson City, and lots of brief chapters in remote and wild Yukon places. I moved to Whitehorse permanently in 1998. Since then I have worked in resource management (policy and planning) in Whitehorse. I have a son who is just fledging now so I am starting to put energy into some of my other interests. I am teaching both swimming and piano. And I am discovering an growing interest in the elders around me. I am curious about the choices and sacrifices people make as life comes at them. I wonder what interests and gifts they have offered. I want to write their stories.
